Ideas About Creating a Nursery

Updated: May 20

  1. Choose a Theme or Color Scheme: Decide on a theme or color palette for the nursery, such as gender-neutral tones, pastel colors, or a specific theme like animals, nature, or space.

  2. Comfortable and Safe Crib: Invest in a sturdy crib that meets safety standards, with a comfortable mattress and fitted sheets. Consider a convertible crib that can grow with your child.

  3. Soft Bedding: Use soft and breathable bedding, including fitted sheets, blankets, and crib bumpers (if preferred), to ensure your baby's comfort during sleep. When fostering, you must not use crib bumper pads, stuffies, blankets, etc. Only baby and crib sheet are allowed in the crib.

  4. Functional Changing Station: Set up a changing table or dresser with a changing pad and storage for diapers, wipes, and other essentials. Keep everything within arm's reach for convenience.

  5. Cozy Nursing Area: Create a comfortable nursing or feeding corner with a rocking chair, glider, or cozy armchair, along with a side table for books, snacks, and a water bottle.

  6. Ample Storage: Incorporate plenty of storage solutions, such as shelves, baskets, drawers, and bins, to organize baby clothes, toys, diapers, and other essentials.

  7. Soft Lighting: Install soft and adjustable lighting options, such as a dimmable overhead light or a bedside lamp, to create a soothing ambiance during nighttime feedings and diaper changes.

  8. Decorative Wall Art: Add decorative elements to the walls, such as framed artwork, wall decals, or personalized prints, to enhance the nursery's theme and add visual interest.

  9. Blackout Curtains or Shades: Install blackout curtains or shades to block out light and create a dark and calming environment for naptime and bedtime.

  10. Safety Measures: Ensure the nursery is safe for your baby by securing furniture to the wall, covering electrical outlets, and removing any potential hazards, such as cords or small objects.

  11. Mobile or Wall Decor: Hang a colorful mobile or decorative wall hanging above the crib to stimulate your baby's senses and encourage visual development.

  12. Soft Rug or Play Mat: Place a soft and padded rug or play mat on the floor to provide a comfortable and safe space for tummy time, crawling, and play.

  13. Personalized Touches: Add personalized touches to the nursery, such as monogrammed items, framed photos, or handmade decorations, to make the space feel special and unique.

  14. Nursery Monitor: Install a baby monitor with audio and video capabilities to keep an eye (and ear) on your baby while they sleep or play in the nursery.

  15. Room for Growth: Choose furniture and decor that can adapt as your baby grows, such as convertible cribs, adjustable shelves, and versatile storage solutions.

One of my most favorite things to do is to create and maintain a nursery. By incorporating these ideas, you can create a cozy, functional, and safe nursery that provides a nurturing environment for your baby's early years.

The first nursery we created for our oldest girl, in 1989 was pink and mint green. I can still picture it. I try not to remember that the carpet was shaggy orange. We were renting an addition to an old farmhouse and that's what was there and we had to live with it. In spite of that, the room was beautiful and I can still remember it vividly. Our next nursery, in another home was blue and white and had Beatrix Potter additions for our little boy. Our third baby shared a room with her sister and the girls room was pink and white. For our fourth child, it was blue and white again and very lovely. Just recently I had the privilege of creating what will probably be the last nursery for a baby in our home. Our very special foster baby came to us the day after he was born, straight from the hospital. His room was cream and white, with windows all around, like a sunroom. We spent a lot of time in their rocking him to lullaby music and I enjoyed every minute of it! Baby was with us for 11 months. We are in regular contact with him and his mom and we are now referred to as "Grandma and Grandpa". We have no other grandchildren. When we do, perhaps we might be able to create a special "nursery corner" somewhere in the home. That's an excuse to hang onto some of that special baby stuff!
