Balancing Health: Navigating Personal and Family Wellness and Living our Best Life


Let's dive into some strategies that have worked for me in ensuring my family and foster kids stay fit and well, that we are keeping appointments and good records/files, all while juggling my own health challenges.

I'm no stranger to health issues, but I refuse to let them define me. Instead, I focus on living each day to the fullest. The importance of living my best life became very clear to me after some serious health challenges. After all, our time on earth is not guaranteed and but a drop in the bucket of eternity, and I'm determined to make the most of it. I believe my time on earth will be reflected in my eternity. This is one of the reasons I have poured into children by fostering.

When it comes to good health, preventive care is key. From regular check-ups to dental cleanings and eye exams, staying proactive with health screenings is crucial for catching any issues early on. I make it a priority for both myself and my family, ensuring everyone stays on track with their health needs.

Education is equally important. I take the time to educate my family about common health topics and symptoms, instilling good hygiene habits to prevent the spread of illness. Plus, we keep a well-stocked first aid kit handy for any minor injuries that may arise. We have a filled pantry that has a lock on the door for all of our medication.

Tracking appointments and medical records is a must, especially for a family that moves frequently like ours. A dedicated health journal helps us stay organized and ensures we have important information at our fingertips when needed. You will thank yourself later.

Planning ahead is another essential aspect of health management. Utilizing the summer months for annual check-ups like teeth cleanings and eye exams, medical check-ups, etc. helps streamline the process and ensures we stay on top of our health needs.

Of course, supplementation plays a role too. Starting the day with vitamins and incorporating nutritious foods into our daily routines helps support overall health. I've noticed a difference, especially when it comes to keeping illness at bay when the kids regularly take Vit. C & D. and have fresh fruit and juice in their school lunches.

Managing family health can be a challenge, but it's a labor of love. Don't hesitate to seek out help when needed, whether it's for physical or mental health needs. Your loved ones deserve the best care possible, and that's a commitment worth making.

After years of effort, one of our children finally received their ASD diagnosis just days before their 18th birthday. It was a long-awaited validation of the countless appointments attended and resources accessed. When the specialist handed me the official letter, they acknowledged that I had diligently laid the groundwork they would have recommended. In that moment, I felt grateful for prioritizing my child's care and navigating the complexities of finding the right resources throughout their life. Hearing the doctor reassure my child that I had done everything possible for them was incredibly validating. It's a sentiment only another parent in a similar situation can truly understand. If you're caring for a family member with special needs, let me assure you, every effort is worth it. Though managing health needs can sometimes feel like a daunting task, it's ultimately an investment in our well-being and that of our families. And that's something worth prioritizing each and every day.

Now I am learning how to take care of myself better, but that will have to wait for another blog post because I have to confess that I am not near to that yet.
